pregnancy post: cravings

as you know, i've decided to start two new regular posts here on elise navidad, one about relationships, and one about pregnancy! i feel like when you're pregnant, all you think about is being pregnant, and when it's over, it's like it never even happened. but there is so much that goes on during pregnancy, and every pregnancy is different, every woman is different, and every baby is different. so there's lots to talk about! for our first discussion, let's talk about cravings...did you have them? when i was pregnant with jude, i craved...

nothing! i had no cravings when i was pregnant with jude at all. okay, occasionally a doughnut from the bakery down the street, but i'm pretty sure i crave those pregnant or not.

do/did you have any cravings while pregnant? some expecting mothers have confessed to craving pickles wrapped in cheese, salsa spooned from the jar, cheesecake topped with black olives, cheese whiz sandwiches, and even steak fat! crazy, right? so, why do women crave such bizarre foods while pregnant? frustratingly enough, no one really knows. other than pica, there is no evidence that cravings are a way of fulfilling nutritional requirements. "if people craved what the body needs," says elizabeth somer, author of nutrition during pregnancy, "we would all eat more broccoli and less chocolate."

so...cravings: did you have them? were you one of the weirdos eating cheese whiz sandwiches?! i'd love to hear your thoughts...

p.s. my dad sent me an email a few months back linking an article that said food women consume during pregnancy can affect the baby's taste preferences out of the womb! so if you are craving lots of chocolate, don't be surprised when your little one has a little sweet tooth.

With Lily the only thing I remember craving was cherry pie. All the time I felt like eating cherry pie, but I don't think I ever got one.
With Aveline the only thing I craved was cinnamon rolls, and again I don't think I ever got one...

spicy food! And it seems to have been passed down to my kids. They have a better tolerance for it than most adults I know.

Ace and Waleena...Two people, actually said...

Although I never craved anything during any of my pregnancies, I had a friend who craved the smell of Vick's Vapor Rub (fortunately, JUST the smell). She had a big locket that she wore and put some inside so she could sniff it when she wanted to...now that, I say, is very strange! J.

My husband's old boss painted her house while pregnant and for some reason the smell of paint was appetizing to her. She wanted to eat it.

I really didn't have any cravings either! I ate a lot of chocolate, but, like you, I'm pretty sure I crave that no matter what. There were treats that sounded especially good to me, but not to the point where if I didn't eat it I would be scarred for life.
